A Secret to Success: Invest in Yourself

Most of us probably first thought about internet marketing as a way to make money, perhaps even a "get rich quick" scheme. But the fact of the matter is, online or offline, you have to be willing to spend money to make money, and you have to be willing to invest your time, as well as your money, if you want to enjoy success.

Anyone with any sense would probably agree that a certain amount of investment in any business is inevitable ... but why not think of that investment as an investment in yourself ? After all, if your business is a success, you will enjoy the benefits of success, making your future that much brighter.

The internet is primarily a medium for the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and information. For the most part, internet surfers go online looking for information, and the success of any internet business also revolves around providing knowledge and information.

According to people who make it their business to study these things, the most commonly used search terms on the search engines include words like "learn", "idea", "tip" and "how to". Netizens are hungry for information.

In order to succeed, you have to learn what it is that people want, and you have to learn how to deliver it to them. That involves identifying quality products, and finding ways to expose people to those products.

Running an internet business doesn't involve much physical labor, but it does involve mental labor, and more importantly, it involves gaining the knowledge to succeed. Once you have gained that knowledge, you will always have it, so any time or money you spend in the process is ultimately an investment in yourself.

At some point in your development as an internet business person, you need to stop and "take stock" of your own skills and knowledge. More importantly, you need to be honest with yourself about the areas of knowledge in which you are lacking, and then either educate yourself in those areas, or be willing to pay someone else to provide those services.

Whether it's web site design, search engine promotion techniques, learning to write persuasive copy, or just finding out how best to get traffic to your site, you need to be honest with yourself as to your knowledge assets and knowledge deficiencies, and then be willing to make the investment in yourself to gain that knowledge.

Suppose you spent $500 or even $1000 on ebooks and courses, but in the process you gained knowledge that would allow you to make that much and more on a regular basis? If you were going to enter any profession, you'd most likely spend money on the education needed for that profession. If you treat your internet business like a business, and consider yourself a professional, then it becomes second nature to invest in yourself.

If you're looking to "get rich quick", or find the elusive "free lunch", you might as well move on, because quality sites don't promote that. In my opinion, internet business has many advantages over traditional "bricks and mortar", but it still requires an investment of time and money.

Granted, there are probably a few people who came up with an idea, tossed together a site, and made a gazillion, but those people are the rare exception, rather than the norm. The real secret to success is to believe in yourself, and to be willing to invest in yourself. You need to be willing to invest the time to learn, and to invest the money to pay the tuition for your education in this new business.

I have no idea who originated it, but there's an old adage that applies to very well to internet business ...

"Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day. Teach him to fish, and he eats for a lifetime."

Is it worth the investment in yourself to learn how to fish?
